Building of the Month April 2018: 11 Eldon Street, Tuxford, Nottinghamshire

Unlisted 11 Eldon Street is an interesting building which makes an important contribution to the conservation area in which it is located. It probably dates from the 17th century, and comprises a two storey red brick front range, with a pantiled rear range. While the front is boarded up, the barns at the back are very tumbledown, and are victims of vegetation and vandalism. Unloved, the whole site is becoming an eyesore in the large village of Tuxford.

This building is in fact right in the centre of the village, and it is not clear why it has been left empty for so long. It would suit either commercial or domestic use, and in 2001 planning permission was granted for residential use in the rear range. This has never happened, and 11 Eldon Street has been in a state of gradual deterioration for some time, with reports of brick work crumbling and falling into the narrow alley that passes alongside it. We hope that the building can be saved before severe dereliction sets in.

Recently we have had reports of pieces of render and brick falling from the upper parts of the building.  A comprehensive repair programme is needed not just to save the building but also to keep the surrounding areas and businesses safe.
