Building of the Month January 2019: East Scale Farmhouse, West of Grisedale, Garsdale, Yorkshire Dales

This seventeenth century farmhouse lies close to two others (both of them listed) and probably formed a community with the families who lived there, giving clues about the way of life for farmers in the 1600s in this part of Yorkshire. The farmhouse also has possible links to early Quakerism in the Cumbrian Dales with an early burial ground located some way behind the house.

The main part of the farmhouse has a symmetrical façade and there are two interesting corbelled chimneys. Internally there has been some loss of original features but a mid to late eighteenth century fireplace remains.

While there are some access issues, this house could be converted to residential use.
