SAVE to showcase alternative vision for threatened Devon Mills at public meeting

As a historic Devon mill complex faces demolition, the campaign to save it and breathe new life into a historic part of the market town of Newton Abbot is gathering pace.
Plans submitted by development giant Lovell Homes to bulldoze Bradley Lane Mills and its medieval Leat waterway completely ignore the potential of the historic mill buildings to be refurbished and reused in an imaginative way that would revitalise this part of the town centre.
SAVE believes Newton Abbot deserves better. We commissioned architect Jonathan Dransfield to design an alternative vision as a way of stimulating fresh thinking and conversations about how local people might want the area to develop.
On 16th May SAVE Britain’s Heritage and Newton Abbot & District Civic Society will be joining forces with Jonathan to showcase our exciting vision for redeveloping Bradley Lane Mills as a vibrant new neighbourhood for the town.
Our proposals, first published in September 2022, would see the unlisted Victorian Mill buildings retained and converted to provide characterful and much needed new homes for the town, 40% of which would be affordable.
Our plans put the needs of the town and community first, with new housing, public squares, river walk and cycle path reconnecting the Mill site with the town centre, together with a new community hub, creative workspaces, riverside café/pub and flexible performance venue.
The alternative vision is intended to show that it’s not too late to stop the Lovell plans and encourage people to call on Teignbridge District Council (which owns the site) for a scheme which befits the history, character and future needs of Newton Abbot.
