Georgian school hall in Ryde, Isle of Wight on market after years of neglect

Vectis Hall, Melville Street, Ryde

Situated in the early Victorian part of Ryde that was built for the burgeoning middle classes who holidayed there, Vectis Hall was originally the first free school in Ryde, dated 1812.

The Hall is two stories except the East bay which contains the Hall through the height of the building. Constructed of stone rubble with ashlar quoins and some yellow brick window dressings. The centre is slightly recessed and has two mid C19 round headed windows with keystones over and a round headed doorway with yellow brick dressings added and double doors. West bay contains original three light casements with glazing bars, but a large window in the East bay is much more modern. All sits under a low pitched hipped slate roof with projecting eaves. It is a charming building of important local interest, which adjoins a small square which is largely unspoilt with regard to its facades.
