SAVE in the news - March 2024
This month the Sunday Times devoted a colourful spread to the story of the rescue of mighty Wentworth Woodhouse and praised SAVE which played an instrumental role when few others cared. Times columnist Libby Purves warned “we squander our heritage in wasteful demolitions”, decrying the 50,000 buildings lost each year and urging the celebration of those who “quietly set new hearts beating in white elephants”. As she said: “Ingenious renovation can be full of hope.”
Building magazine covered the RICS retrofit debate that our director Henrietta Billings spoke at, and also the news that an unprecedented 2,000 objections have been lodged against Sellar’s Liverpool Street plans. Henrietta was quoted in the Daily Mail and Evening Standard on the need for strategic oversight of the cumulative impact of towers in our cities.
And papers and radio stations from Cornwall to Manchester covered our casework this month. In North Wales the Daily Post drew attention to the plight of Plas Nannau, an important Grade II* manor house that has been abandoned for decades. And the Portsmouth News also quoted our Buildings at Risk officer Liz Fuller talking about the city's threatened heritage.
