SAVING Time, Money and a Great Listed Building
Join SAVE Britain’s Heritage and Twentieth Century Society for a special event celebrating the design and architecture of Richmond House in Whitehall, central London.
Speakers will include writer Roland Jeffery on the career and significance of Sir William Whitfield, architectural historian Andrew Saint on the historic character of Whitehall, architect Mark Hines on the re-use potential of Richmond House, president of SAVE Britain’s Heritage Marcus Binney on alternative sites for a temporary chamber on the parliamentary estate and director of Twentieth Century Society Catherine Croft will assess the significance of the case for the future of 20th Century conservation in the UK. The event will be chaired by Hugh Pearman, architecture critic and editor of the RIBA Journal.
Designed by Sir William Whitfield just 30 years ago, this award winning grade II* building is under threat from demolition. With £400m development plans, Richmond House, the former department of health HQ is set to be flattened, apart from the entrance facade, to make way for a temporary House of Commons while the neighbouring Palace of Westminster is refurbished. We have identified at least three alternative sites that would be quicker, cheaper and avoid the demolition of a great listed building.

Venue: Committee Room 12, Main Palace of Westminster - Guests should arrive via the main visitors entrance at Cromwell Green, St Margaret Street and make their way through Westminster Hall then Central Lobby to the main committee corridor.
