WALKING TOUR: Pontefract, the hidden gem

Join SAVE and Mike Ashworth, former Head of Design & Heritage for Transport for London, for an opportunity to explore and discover one of the North’s overlooked gems – the historic town of Pontefract, West Yorkshire. Once one of the most important towns in England, site of the great Castle and for centuries the County town of the West Riding, it is now largely remembered for what was once its most important industry – liquorice! Despite the slow decline from its industrial heyday, Pontefract retains much of the historic market centre that contains numerous fascinating streets and buildings that deserve closer inspection in the midst of challenges that face many such urban centres.

The walk will take around two hours and is over relatively gentle terrain. There will be an opportunity to finish the tour in one of the many coffee shops in the town centre as well as to visit a great temporary exhibition in Pontefract’s superb Museum that looks at the work of the Twentieth Century poster and maritime artist Charles Pears (1873 – 1958) who was born in the town.
