Woodstock Station Spared Demolition for the Second Time

Blenheim and Woodstock Station, Woodstock, Oxfordshire

We wrote about the plight of this lovely little former station in the December 2008 Newsletter (refer to for further information). We heard that the application was refused in February but only a few weeks later were alerted to a second application with only very minor amendments. We are very pleased to announce that this has in turn been refused.

Built in 1885 by the 8th Duke of Marlborough to serve Woodstock and nearby Blenheim Palace. It was shut in 1958 and despite the loss of iconic station features, remains largely intact, and perfectly capable of reuse within any wider scheme.

These reasons for refusal were clearly stated after the first application:

The former station building makes a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the Woodstock Conservation Area.

And

Due to the siting, scale and form of the proposed development, the proposal will have a detrimental impact upon the character of the streetscene, the appearance of the wider Conservation Area and the setting of adjacent Listed Buildings.

For further details of the most recent application, the Planning Application (09/0201/P/FP, 09/0202/P/LB & 09/0203/P/DCA) can be found on the Planning pages of the West Oxon District Council website.
